The Green Minute: The Greening of the Entertainment Industry & Tips

Perhaps no other industry is working harder to be eco-friendly than the entertainment industry. Linking the power of entertainment to environmental awareness, the industry has formed a non-profit group called the Environmental Media Association to harness the power of the industry and media to educate people about environmental issues and sustainable lifestyles.

The association is implementing several programs, including a “Green Seal Awards” program, a school gardens program, and an initiative to “green” plotlines and characters on television and in movies. You can learn more about the Entertainment Media Association at ema-online.org.

One other service EMA provides on their website is a “tip of the day”. These are helpful one-line tips that you can share with friends and on websites. Here are a few examples from the past week.

- Wash your clothes with cold water rather than warm or hot water to save electricity & money on your electric bill.

- The newest, most-efficient washers use four times less energy than the least-efficient machines, and save up to $70 a year in energy costs.

-Bring your used (burnt out) CFL bulbs to Lowe’s or Ikea to properly dispose of them.

- Eco friendly clothes? Choose cotton and wool. Natural fibers are easier to care for. Often they can be washed in cool water and hung out to dry, reducing chemical use and energy, too.

A very effective organization, you can access EMA’s useful tips of the day archive at ema-online.org/tip_of_the_day.
