One of the fastest growing and most effective regional conservation organizations in the US is a group out of the Chicago area called Chicago Wilderness.
Chicago Wilderness is a regional alliance that connects people and nature. They are more than 260 organizations working together to restore local nature and improve the quality of life for all who live here, by protecting the lands and waters on which we all depend. Their four primary initiatives include:
- restoring nature to health
- protecting green infrastructure
- mitigating climate change
- leaving no child inside
The Chicago Wilderness region encompasses southeast Wisconsin, northeast Illinois, northwest Indiana and southwest Michigan. The eco-region holds nearly 370,000 acres of protected lands and waters, as well as many that remain unprotected. The region’s landscape includes prairies, wooded communities and Lake Michigan. Thousands of native plant and animal species live there among the more than 10 million people who also call the region home.
