Charles C. Mann, journalist and author of 1493: Uncovering the New World Columbus Created, talks about the impact of European settlers on the American east coast. Citing disease and reforestation, Mann declares that by 1650, America was a very different landscape from when Columbus arrived. His book gives us clues about ecology pre-1493 and how we are all interconnected. Below is a brief video describing how the entire ecological system was changed. We also provide links to the entire lecture and a recent National Public Radio “Fresh Air” interview.
